In September 2005, Ma-Yi Theater Company proudly presents the New York premiere of Tony Award winner Warren Leight's NO FOREIGNERS BEYOND THIS POINT. The play is set in Guangdong, China, in 1980, just after the horrors of the Cultural Revolution. Two young idealistic Americans become the first foreign instructors at a small isolated trade school. Their students crave access to everything western, the school's bureaucrats are desperate to control that access, and the Americans soon find themselves living under virtual house arrest. In a world where betrayal is necessary for survival, the students and teachers struggle to overcome cultural, political, and personal barriers to intimacy and identity.

In March 2006, Ma-Yi Theater is launching the world premiere of TRIAL BY WATER, written by a ferociously bright, young talent, Qui Nguyen, in collaboration with Queens Theater In The Park. It's a searing account of the odyssey of two Vietnamese brothers, escaping their homeland in search of "a better life." What starts out as a journey at sea quickly becomes an allegory of desperate choices and unthinkable acts of survival. Mr. Nguyen upends the traditional narratives of the Boat People, eschewing stereotypes for a gritty, nuanced, and honest portrayal of the many compromises immigrants must go through to search for permanent moorings.
