Adaptations can be so treacherous. The classic and the playwright can become co-dependents. He gets stuck in literalness ("I must be faithful to the master") or high on his on excesses ("I'll show I'm his equal").
Mr. Rno's imagination vaults past these traps. He creates wildly unpredictable figures. Under Will Pomerantz's direction, "Wave" pulses along. (Even between scenes, when the actors move props and furniture, we feel the tension.) Three of the six cast members play two roles and do so expertly. Mr. Domingo nails Jason's shallow courtesy and frightening self-absorption. Ms. Barall's M moves from fretful sweetness to rage and from ordinary to epic unhappiness. She is utterly concentrated, and so we are moved, not just frightened and appalled. There is no grandstanding here.
