TRIAL BY WATER is a searing account of the odyssey of two Vietnamese teenage brothers who are forced to escape their homeland in the middle of the night. As they set off for America by boat, with the dream of ³a better life,² their voyage at sea becomes an allegory of desperate choices. When the boatıs engine breaks down, their journey turns into a nightmare. Faced with unthinkable acts of survival, each brother confronts his own issues of mortality and morality.
The work is a truly inspiring piece of theater which gives insight into the history and identity of many Vietnamese Americans. Based on actual events, Mr. Nguyen upends the traditional narratives of the Boat People, eschewing stereotypes for a gritty, nuanced, and honest portrayal of the many compromises immigrants must go through to search for permanent moorings.
The cast includes Arthur Acuña, Genevieve DeVeyra, Dinh Doan, Jojo Gonzalez, Karen Tsen Lee, and puppeteers Timothy McCown Reynolds and Jessica Chanly Smith.
The production has scenic and costume design by Clint Ramos with lighting design by Nicole Pearce, sound design by Elizabeth Rhodes, and puppet design by Jane Stein, who won acclaim for her mask work on Peter Shafferıs EQUUS.
